A video installation planned and created as part of an industry-academia collaboration between Nihon University College of Art and KADOKAWA Corporation, for "Hiroshi Aramata's Yokai Pandemonium 2020," the opening exhibition of the Kadokawa Culture Museum. A projector embedded in the bon-dance tower (yagura) built at the center of the hall projects countless pixel yokai onto the floor, dancing in time with the music.
Visitors hold a white tray and use it as a screen, enjoying the images as they circle the tower. Using a special projection technique that leaves nothing on the floor itself, visitors carrying their raised white trays wind their way around the tower through the dark, themselves becoming part of a strange Hyakki Yagyo—a night parade of one hundred demons.
Pixel artist Hattori Graphics was brought in to lead the main design and graphic design. A new course was also set up in the Department of Design specifically for this work, where the piece was made together with the students.
