This digital picture scroll was created following the 2020 designation of "Tatsuta Road and Kamenose" as a Japan Heritage site, commissioned by Kashiwara City (Osaka) and Sango Town (Nara). The Tatsuta Road is known as Japan's earliest official highway, connecting Yamato (Nara) and Kawachi (Osaka) since the Asuka period, with numerous tales preserved in the Man'yoshu and other classical poetry. However, no historical maps illustrating the entire extent of the ancient road exist today.
Under the supervision of curators from the Kashiwara City Museum of History, this work reconstructs the historical landscape as a pixel animation. It renders the ancient topography in panoramic form, overlaying human activities and historical episodes across layers of time. Designed so that the layers of history—difficult to convey through text and still images alone—can be taken in from a bird's-eye view, the animation is permanently exhibited as a centerpiece for regional heritage centers, including the Kashiwara City Museum of History.
