明治末から昭和初期にかけて活躍した日本画家・小川芋銭の山水画をモチーフにした映像インスタレーションです。
小川芋銭の山水画に見られる、限られた筆致から広がりのある風景を想像させる表現に着目し、そこに俳句や枯山水にも通じる「省略と想像」の関係を見出しました。描き尽くすのではなく、限られた要素を手がかりに見る側の想像を引き出す。その感覚を、限られた画素のなかでイメージを成立させるピクセルアートと重ね合わせています。
小川芋銭の山水画をピクセルアニメーションとして描き直すことで、現代のデジタル表現を通して、芋銭の絵に潜んでいた「省略と想像」の感覚をあらためて捉え直そうとした作品です。
「キラキラ、ざわざわ、ハラハラ展」（横須賀美術館）にて制作し、同館所蔵「春夏秋冬（小川芋銭）」と併せた展示として公開しました。
A video installation based on the landscape paintings of Usen Ogawa, a Japanese painter active from the late Meiji era into the early Showa.
Focusing on how Usen Ogawa's landscape paintings use a limited number of brushstrokes to evoke expansive scenery, the work finds in them a relationship of "omission and imagination" that also runs through haiku and dry landscape gardens. Rather than depicting everything, such expression draws out the viewer's own imagination from a limited set of cues. That sensibility is here overlaid onto pixel art, a medium in which an image is likewise constructed within a limited number of pixels.
By redrawing Usen Ogawa's landscape paintings as a pixel animation, the work attempts to recapture, through contemporary digital expression, the sense of "omission and imagination" latent within Usen's paintings.
Produced for the exhibition "Sparkling, Buzzing, and Suspenseful" at the Yokosuka Museum of Art, it was shown alongside the museum's own Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter by Usen Ogawa.
